UN envoy calls Syrian Constitutional Committee talks as disappointing

Story summary
Five days of talks by the new Syrian constitutional committee in Geneva have ended without result and the UN envoy to the talks called them as disappointing.

The fifth round of talks of the new Syrian Constitutional Committee ended two days ago after five days of talks in Geneva.

UN Special Representative for Syria Geer Pederson described the round of talks as "disappointing".

"I told 45 members [of the new Syrian constitutional committee] that we could not go on like this, and this week was quite disappointing," Pederson said in a press conference, detailed on the UN website, adding that "Before the talks started, I had set some goals that I thought we could achieve, but I must say we could not. I think the reason is that there is no understanding of how we can make progress in this committee."

Pederson added that the meeting did not even agree on the timing of the next meeting. He, however, expressed hope that he would travel to Damascus in the near future to discuss current issues with Syrian government officials.

The UN special envoy for Syria also said he would hold talks with representatives of the Syrian opposition, Russia, Turkey and Iran, as in the past.
