PUK leadership council approves of amendments in party by-Laws

Story summary

Patriotic Union of Kurdistan's (PUK) Leadership Council member Mustafa Chawrash said in a press conference on Thursday, February 13, that the Leadership Council had approved of the amendments in PUK party by-laws that consist of 77 articles.

Chawrash said that the Leadership Council had made “final judgments” and decision concerning the party’s by-laws that are 77 articles.

“One of the articles is about women’s rights in the party, they will be in all councils within the PUK by at least 25 percent,” Chawrash said.

During the meeting the Leadership Council also discussed mechanisms of how other smaller parties can integrate with the PUK and the financial and budget aspects of the part, according to Chawrash, NRT reported.

“The Leadership Council will hold other meetings to revise all the suggestions and ideas that the members floated in previous meetings and to further solidify the party’s by-laws,” he added.

The party adopted a new leadership structure on Saturday following a vote by the powerful General Leadership Committee, which has been voting on internal party by-laws.

Under the new system, the party would have at least two co-presidents sharing power. There will likely also be a deputy leader position alongside the presidents, though the nature of that position is still under discussion.

Among those rumored for the top leadership are Lahur Sheikh Jangi and Bafel Talabani, who are first cousins and received the two highest vote totals during the recent party congress in December. Current President of Iraq Barham Salih’s name has also been floated for a top position.
