Poll says Erdogan would probably lose  election to rivals

Story summary
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan may lose an election against three of the country’s most prominent opposition politicians, according to a survey by research company Metropoll.

Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu and Ankara mayor Mansur Yavas could both beat Erdogan in a run-off for the post of president by more than 10 percentage points, Metropoll director Ozer Sencar said on Friday, citing the April poll of 1,752 people.
Meral Aksener, the leader of the opposition Good Party (İP) may win an election against Erdogan by 4 percentage points, it said.
Turkey is due to hold presidential and parliamentary elections in 2023, the country’s centenary year.
Public support for Erdogan has declined over the past two years after a currency crisis led to an economic recession and infections of COVID-19 reached the fifth highest globally.
Erdogan may get re-elected if his run-off opponent is Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the leader of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP). Erdogan would probably win that contest by almost 3 percentage points, Metropoll said.
The poll interviewed people located in 28 of the 81 provinces of Turkey between April 16 and April 21. The margin or error was plus or minus 2.34 percentage points.
