The Turkish government jailed Demirtas during a period of emergency rule in November 2016, accusing him of links to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which has waged an armed struggle for Kurdish self-rule in Turkey since 1984.
The government has refused to comply with a ruling from the European Court of Human Rights demanding Demirtas’s release.
The Kurdish politician was handed a four-year-and-eight-month sentence for terrorism propaganda last year, but faces dozens of other charges carrying combined sentences that could exceed 140 years.
