Russian, SDF commanders discuss phase two in Syria border security deal

Story summary

Commander of the majority-Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Mazloum Kobani and the commander of Russia's armed forces in Syria, Alexander Chaiko, discussed a second phase for the agreement between the SDF and the Syrian army regarding border security in northern Syria, pro-Kurdish Rudaw reported on Saturday.

The SDF and Russia agreed on the deployment of Russian forces in Amuda, Tel Tamr and Ayn Issa during last week’s meeting in Amuda near Syria’s Hasakah province.
The second phase will include the Syrian Border Guard units being deployed along the border from Kobani to Semelka, two towns along Syria’s border with Turkey and Iraq respectively, Rudaw said.
According to the agreement, as cited by Rudaw, Syrian army forces will deploy along the border with Turkey in Kobani, Manbij, Derbisiyah, Amuda, Qamishli and Derik.
Bedran Çiya Kurd from the majority-Kurdish administration in northern Syria was quoted by Rudaw as saying that Syrian Border Guard will be using the bases along the border with Turkey, which U.S. troops evacuated.
The agreement with the Syrian government through Russia only pertains to military matters, Çiya Kurd said.
The SDF had first struck a deal with the Syrian government in Octoberafter Turkey launched a military incursion into the region on Oct. 9.
