Police says mass grave containing 400 people found west of Mosul

A mass grave containing the remains of an estimated 400 people has been uncovered in Hamidat village in Tal Afar district, 60 kilometers west of Mosul, Nineveh Police Command said on Sunday, January 31.
The victims were executed by Islamic State (ISIS) militants during the period when the group controlled the area, the police command said in a statement.
The bodies were sent to the forensic medicine office in Mosul for autopsies and identification, it added.
Mosul and the surrounding area were held by ISIS for three years starting in 2014. During that time, the militant group imposed harsh sentences on those who violated its interpretation of Islamic Law.
