Iraqi forces, Peshmerga conduct joint operation against ISIS in disputed areas

Story summary
The Iraqi Security Forces and the Peshmerga engaged in a joint operation in Nineveh governorate in an effort to combat remnants of the Islamic State (ISIS) militant group and close the security vacuum in the disputed areas, Iraq’s Security Media Cell said on Saturday, November 6.

The operation focused on the Upper and Lower Kashaf area in Makhmour district, the Cell said on Twitter. Nineveh Operations Command and the Sixth Axis of the Peshmerga were supported by the Iraqi Air Force and the International Coalition.
The area has seen an uptick in ISIS activity in recent weeks, with several recent attacks on the Peshmerga, including one on October 30 in which two Peshmerga were killed, NRT reported.
The disputed areas are a belt of territory stretching from Nineveh governorate through Saladin, Kirkuk, and Diyala that is claimed by both Baghdad and Erbil. ISIS exploits the loose security control in this contested area to launch attacks on civilian and military targets.
Over the summer, the Iraqi Security Forces and the Peshmerga announced plans to enhance their cooperation in order close this security vacuum.
