Nechirvan Barzani: low turnout in Iraq elections was a warning to parties

Story summary
Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani said on Tuesday, October 26, that the recent Iraqi parliamentary election was one of the best that has occurred in the country in "technical” terms, but held a deeper message for the countries leaders.

Speaking at the Middle East Research Institute (MERI) forum in Erbil, Barzani said that the low turnout in the election was a warning for the political parties that people deserve more than they are currently offered in terms of governance and services.

He said that people who are born in 2000 and after "do not know what we have done in the past,” referring to the leaders in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

Barzani’s remarks reiterate what he said on October 12, when he said that voter turnout was a "clear message” that the people expect "better livelihoods and improved public services, to which they are entitled.”
