Russia agrees with some kind of decentralization in Syria: envoy

Story summary
The representative of the Syrian Kurdish administration in the Kurdistan Region says "What Russia intends is not really federalism, but a project that recognizes the self-ruling and has reached an agreement with the central government."

Referring to some reports about possible Russian accord with the issue of federalism in Syria after the visit of delegation from the administration to Moscow, Nurshan Hussein said: The delegation has not returned from the visit to comment over the issue, but what Russia intends is not really federalism, but a project that recognizes the self-ruling administration within an agreement with the central government.

She told Kurdpress News Agency that: "The project we believe in is a decentralized and democratic Syria, and every time the dialogue [over the project] begins, its details will be clear during dialogues," adding that "we strive for a democratic Syria that recognizes all religions and nationalities."

The representative added: "Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry had said in a statement that projects such as the Kurdistan Region of Iraq could also exist in Syria. Although this is an old statement, our problem with the central government is the lack of a decentralized and democratic."
