Amnesty International expresses concern over mistreatment of Kurdish citizens in Turkey

Story summary

Amnesty International has called on Turkey to abide by the principles of a fair trial in dealing with Kurdish dissidents and political figures and adhere to international treaties prohibiting torture.

Amnesty International has expressed concern about some actions taken by Turkish security and judicial agencies against the defendants, including the throwing down of two Kurdish citizens from a helicopter and poisoning some Kurdish politicians at a police detention center.

Milena Boyum, an official of the organization in Turkey affairs, told the English-language Arab News newspaper that an independent investigation should be launched into the mistreatment of Kurdish detainees and the issue of torturing Kurdish activists in Turkey.

She stressed that Turkey is a member of two anti-torture organizations in the world and must fulfill its responsibility to comply with the provisions and adhere to these treaties.

Meanwhile, Ali Kenanoglu, a representative of the Kurdish People's Democratic Party (HDP0, three members of which have recently been arrested on charges of launching a campaign in support of Kobani, stressed that the Turkish government targets the Kurds in any war and violence-related issues because the Kurds are easily victimized in Turkey.

She stressed that protection and human rights issues regarding the Kurds are not being observed and that the Kurdish repression may intensify in Turkey.
