Unknown gunmen shoot at the house of a KDP official in Kirkuk

Story summary
A political source in Kirkuk said the house of a Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) official in Kirkuk was attacked by unknown assailants but the incident did not cause any casualties.

According to Shafaq News, Fahmi Fayek, the deputy head of the third branch of the KDP, said in this regard: "Several unknown people shot at the house of Wuria Tabli, the head of the eighth local committee of the KDP in Kirkuk."

Fahmi Fayeq added: "Fortunately, no one was injured in this incident. However, the attack caused material damages to the house and the attackers fled the scene."

The KDP official called on Kirkuk security officials to ensure the security of party officials in the province.

The province is a disputed region which both Baghdad and Erbil governments claim authority over. It was under the control of Peshmerga forces until months after the Kurdistan Region independence referendum in 2017 when 93 percent of Kirkuk voters voted in favor of leaving Iraq and become a part of the Kurdistan Region. Later Iraqi forces took the control of the province from Peshmerga forces. The ruling KDP has closed all its officies in the province since the time and calls the province an occupied region. However, it intends to return to the province and take part in the upcoming Iraqi elections set for September.
