The United States will definitely leave Syrian Kurds alone: researcher
Story summary
Joshua Landis says the United States will definitely abandon the Syrian Kurds, so it is better for the Kurds to come to terms with Damascus.
A Middle East researcher at the University of Oklahoma, Joshua Landis says the United States has deliberately chosen Syria's best economic region, which is why it has picked Kurdish-controlled northeast in order to settle its troops there.
Pointing out that the US goal of being in the Syrian Kurdish-controlled region is to control the most important part of the Syrian economy, he told the Gray Zone news website: "The Syrian Kurdish-controlled territory is definitely the best Syrian region and is in fact a gold mine. The region is rich in oil, water resources and agriculture, and a significant part of Syria's agricultural and electricity products come from this region.
"The United States has chosen this region for the sake of economic interests and to control the Syrian economy," Joshua Landis said about the goal behind the US presence in the Syrian Kurdish-controlled region.
The Middle East researcher believes that the United States will definitely leave the Kurdish-controlled area of Syria, and that as soon as it leaves, Turkey and the Syrian central government will compete for control. Therefore, it is better for the Kurds to reach an agreement with the Syrian central government.
Professor Joshua Landis concluded by saying that it was true that the Syrian Kurds said they did not want to secede from Syria, but that they would undoubtedly seek to establish an independent entity. However, there is no infrastructure to establish an independent entity in the Kurdish-controlled area, and no one at the United Nations is willing to vote for it.
