Finland has contacted with Syrian Kurdish region

Story summary

Finland is among a limited number of countries that have ties with the Kurdish Authority in Syria in northern Syria, according to the Centre for Counter-Extremism Research.

The center, in a report on repatriating IS prisoners to European countries, stated that the international illegitimacy of the Kurdish self-ruling system in northern Syria, as well as possible links of the region with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), is the main reason behind the European states’ denial to cooperate with the region.

The center has identified Finland as one of the rare countries that established a direct relationship with the Syrian self-ruling region and Kurdish authorities since last September, and even Abdul Karim Omar, the joint chairman of the Kurdish Federation for Foreign Relations, travelled to Finland to investigate the conditions of IS prisoners and bringing IS European members to justice.

The center cited Ankara's claim that Syrian Kurds are attacking Turkey as the main reason behind the refusal of the European countries to have ties with the Kurdish region in the north of war-torn Syria. However, the center quoted U.S. military officials as saying that the Americans in Syria have no information about possible attacks by Syrian Kurdish troops into Turkey. However, Syrian Kurds have defended themselves against Turkey attacks.

According to the report while some progress has been made in negotiations with the Kurds in Syria, Finnish officials has said that exaggerations have been made in the report. In addition, Finnish authorities are likely focusing more on coronavirus and the country's plan to bring IS members in Syrian Kurdish-controlled region to Finland has been halted.
