In a article, the US military-affiliated Sofrep magazine highlighted recent efforts by Kurds in Iraq and Syria to establish an independent states. The paper explains the situation in various countries where American troops have been present.

Sofrep addressed the issue of the referendum independence in the Kurdistan Region in 2017, which it said was a serious attempt by Iraqi Kurds to obtain independence from Iraq.

According to the paper, a large number of U.S. politicians are not willing to support Kurdish independence as they afraid the US ties with Ankara could be disturbed.

Sofrep insisted that the U.S. would not in any way support the Kurdish independence, and that if the U.S. does not support it, the independence cannot achieve would legitimacy in the international community.

The magazine further said that there are many different political views in the Kurdish region that have aggravated political divisions among Iraqi Kurds and it does not seem that they can unify their views on independence and that the division among the Kurds is one of the most serious obstacles on independence.
