Story summary
Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, who will meet with US President Joe Biden at the White House on July 26, says Iraqis are ready to stand on their own feet and defend themselves.

"We no longer need US combat troops in Iraq," said al-Kadhimi ahead of his trip to the United States to meet with Joe Biden, adding that "We need information support, training, advice and capacity building."

"We no longer need US combat troops," he told the Washington Post.

"We need intelligence support, training, consulting and capacity building," al-Kadhimi said.

"We are looking for a strategic and long-term relationship," the Iraqi prime minister said of his expectations of the level of Iraq's relations with the United States.

Al-Kazemi also said "Iranians have influence in Iraq, but some of that influence is due to their concerns about the United States and its role in Iraq. We need to reassure Iranians that our relationship with the United States is based on common interests. Iraq must pursue its interests first and foremost."
