European Parliament runs campaign in support of realising Demirtas
Story summary
590 out of 705 members of the European Parliament responded positively to the campaign for the release of Selahattin Demirtas, former co-chair of Turkey pro-Kurdish People's Democratic Party (HDP).
Evin Ingers, a member of the Social Democratic Workers' Party, said the issue would be discussed at the EU Council of Ministers on March 10.
As Turkey refused to comply with the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) request to release Demirtas, a group of representatives from 27 EU member states launched a campaign for the release of the former Kurdish party leader.
"Demirtas should be released as he is in prison for political reasons solely," Evin Incir, a member of the Social Democratic Workers' Party who submitted the bill to parliament, told Euphrates News Agency.
"We have sent the signatures to the Council of Ministers of the European Union. This issue will be discussed on March 10th," the official stated.
