Iraqi FM visits Tehran on Saturday

Story summary
Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein traveled to Tehran for meetings on Saturday, February 27, with senior Iranian security and diplomatic officials.

According to the Iraqi foreign ministry, the trip was “to discuss regional developments” and develop ways to avoid the escalation of regional tensions.
On Thursday, the US conducted airstrikes on facilities used by Kataib Hezbollah and Kataib Sayyid al-Shuhada, militant groups that are part of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) and receive significant backing from Iran.
The US has blamed them for recent rocket attacks against the airbase in Erbil and the Green Zone in Baghdad.
In a meeting with Hussein, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran Ali Shamkhani said that the US strikes would only serve to bolster the resurgence of the Islamic State (ISIS) militant group.
Shamkhani also said that progress had been made towards reaching an agreement on how Iraq could repay the debt it owes Iran stemming from the export of Iranian gas.
Hussein also met with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif, where they discussed “bilateral relations,” according to the Iraqi foreign ministry.
