Turkish FM meets Iraqi PM in Baghdad

Story summary

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu met with caretaker Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi during a visit to Baghdad on Thursday, January 9.

Cavusoglu arrived in Baghdad to address recent tensions between the US and Iran currently playing out in Iraq.
In a tweet, Cavusoglu expressed solidarity and support for the Iraqi people, who he said were going through a difficult stage. He added that the pair had discussed steps that would protect Iraq from tensions in the region, NRT reported.
The Turkish foreign ministry announced Cavusoglu’s trip on Wednesday, as part of what Ankara called “intensified diplomatic efforts to alleviate the escalated tension in the aftermath of recent developments in the region.”
US forces assasinate Iranian prominent military commander Qassem Soleimani last week, prompting Iran to promise revenge, which it fulfilled on Wednesday by launching 22 missiles at bases hosting US and Coalition troops in Iraq.
Cavusoglu said on Monday that Turkey was in contact with all parties in the region and Washington to de-escalate tensions, adding that Ankara would work to help solve the issue.
