Selahattin Demirtas appeals again for his release

Story summary
The imprisoned former co-chair of the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), Selahattin Demirtas, has filed another individual application to Turkey’s Constitutional Court (AYM), demanding the implementation of a European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruling for his immediate release.

In its final judgement regarding a 2018 decision on Demirtas’s release, the ECHR Grand Chamber on December 22 ruled that Demirtas’s four years in prison violated his rights under five different categories, including freedom of expression and right to liberty.

According to Ahval Demirtas’s lawyer Mahsuni Karaman announced the appeal via his Twitter account on late Friday.

“In the face of resistance to the ECHR ruling for Demirtas’s immediate release, we filed another individual appeal to the AYM,” Karaman said. “If the AYM doesn’t end the nonsense that ECHR rulings are not binding, the ECHR will rule that the AYM is a non-effective domestic remedy.”

Demirtas was detained alongside other HDP deputies on November 4, 2016 over alleged links to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), an outlawed militant group engaged in an internal conflict with Turkey since 1984.
