Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government decided on January 12 to extend Germany’s armed forces’ (Bundeswehr) mission in Iraq and to end its mission in Syria, Deutsche Welle said.
The Bundeswehr’s mandate allows for the deployment of up to 500 troops in Iraq.
The Bundeswehr mission began in 2015 to advise Iraqi security forces in the fight against the Islamic State (ISIS), support the coalition efforts against the militant group and to refuel military aircraft by air, according to the AFP.
Most of Germany’s troops are in the Kurdistan Region, Deutsche Well said.
Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) President Nechirvan Barzani thanked the Bundestag for its decision, saying, "ISIS remains a serious threat to International peace and regional stability and the continued joint effort is needed to defeat terrorism.”
