28 Turkish opposition lawmakers facing stripping of immunity

Story summary
Turkish prosecutors have submitted summary of proceedings requesting to lift the parliamentary immunities of 28 opposition lawmakers, mostly from the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), Turkish broadcaster NTV reported.

A total of 25 lawmakers from the HPD, including the party’s co-chairwoman Pervin Buldan, as well as members of parliament from the main opposition Republican Peoples' Party (CHP), Workers' Party of Turkey (TIP) and Democratic Regions Party (DBP) are facing the lifting of their immunities, according to the proposal, NTV said.

The summaries of proceedings against the MPs are set to be examined by the Constitution and Justice Commission of Parliament before a vote by the general assembly. If the assembly votes in favor of stripping the lawmakers of their seats, they will face trial.

The Turkish government has jailed dozens of HDP mayors and officials, replacing the majority of HDP municipalities in Kurdish-majority eastern and southeastern Turkey won in the 2019 elections with government appointed trustees.

Ankara accuses the HDP of links to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), a claim the HDP denies.

The party is facing closure over alleged ties to the PKK.
