Iraqi PM says foreign combat troops will leave Iraq soon
Story summary
Explaining his remarks last night about the withdrawal of foreign combat troops from his country, al-Kadhimi said that in the next few days, all foreign combat forces affiliated with the US-led International Coalition Against ISIS, will strategically leave Iraq within the framework of the agreement with the United States.
Referring to the future role of US forces in his country, Kadhimi said that these forces will work as advisers.
The Iraqi Prime Minister described the withdrawal of US troops from his country as a demonstration of the ability of all Iraqi forces to maintain security and stability in Iraq.
The remarks come a day after Gen. McKenzie, commander of US Central Command in the Middle East (Centcom), said Friday in contradictory terms to Washington's withdrawal from Iraq by the end of this year that 2,500 US troops would stay in Iraq.
"Some Iraqi forces and political groups want all American troops out of their country," he said. "But we will not leave the country, and this may provoke reactions as the year is ending."
Despite the explicit opposition of Iraqi parties and people to the presence of US troops in their country, McKenzie claimed: "Iraqis want us to be in their country and they want us to take part in the war against ISIS with them. We will stay in Iraq as long as the Iraqi people want us to be in their country and we can agree on that."
