Turkish troops to be deployed in Nagorno-Karabakh for a year: defense ministry

Story summary
Turkish defense ministry said on Sunday that troops from the country will operate within the joint monitoring center with Russia to monitor the ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh for one year.

Turkish soldiers "will work in the joint center to be established with Russia and in the activities to be carried out by this center for a period of one year," the ministry said.

According to Ahval news website Turkey’s parliament on November 17 granted the government permission to deploy peacekeepers to ally Azerbaijan to monitor a ceasefire deal between the country and Armenia aiming to end the conflict over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed the truce a week earlier to halt military clashes over the disputed enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh, which saw six weeks of fighting.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will determine how many troops will be deployed to the region.
