Pompeo urges Baghdad to resolve its differences with Erbil

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called on the Iraqi federal government to resolve the remaining problems with Erbil, the capital of Kurdistan Region.
"We are committed to helping Iraq and have pledged $ 200 million to Iraq," Mike Pompeo told a news conference with his Iraqi counterpart, Fuad Hussein.
The U.S top foreign affairs official also stressed that Washington backs early elections in Iraq.
Pompeo described the talks with the Iraqi side as constructive and said: "We wish Iraq was free of corruption. In our talks with Iraq, we will not focus on the military issue."
"We ask Baghdad's government to resolve its differences with the KRG, " Mike Pompeo also said about Baghdad's relations with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
On the other hand, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein stressed at the press conference that Iraq's foreign policy is based on the national interests of that country and that Baghdad always strives to interact with neighboring countries based on the principle of common interests and non-interference in its internal affairs.
"Iraq considers the United States a strong ally, but at the same time, Baghdad's relations with Tehran in cultural, political and economic fields are based on common interests," Hussein added.
Referring to the start of the second round of strategic talks between Iraq and the United States, the Iraqi foreign minister stated: "Baghdad and Washington are in the same trench in the war against the IS, and the cooperation in the fight against the IS will continue."
"Iraq will sign a contract with the American oil drilling company of Shevron today, and talks will continue in the fields of energy and health and culture," Fouad Hussein said.
