Joint Iraqi army, Peshmerga centers to be opened soon: spokesman

Story summary

Four coordination centers with the Peshmerga will open once a final agreement establishing a regulatory mechanism to manage them is in place, Spokesperson for Iraq’s Joint Operations Command Tahsin al-Khajaji said on Monday, July 27.

On July 9, it was announced that the Iraqi Security Forces and the Peshmerga would open up centers in Nineveh, Makhmour, Kirkuk, and Diyala in order to better coordinate their actions against Islamic State (IS) militants in the disputed areas.

Al-Khafaji said during a press conference that “Discussions are ongoing with the Peshmerga to find a special structure for the four sub-coordination centers, in addition to the two main centers in Baghdad and Erbil.”

One outstanding issue appears to be the degree to which the Peshmerga would operate in territory outside what it currently controls, including areas like Kirkuk, NRT reported.
