PUK, KDP to hold meeting on Saturday: official
Story summary
With tensions high on a range of issues, Secretary General for the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s (KDP) Politburo Fazil Mirani said on Tuesday, May 5, that his party will meet with officials from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) on Saturday.
Mirani said that the meeting would take place at the offices of Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani.
Although the KDP and PUK are governing partners in the current cabinet, tensions have grown between the two historic rivals since the PUK’s party congress in December and the election of Lahur Sheik Jangi and Bafel Talabani as co-presidents of the party, NRT reported.
Most recently, the two have butted heads over the deployment of Peshmerga units to Zini Warte and plans to pursue administrative decentralization within the Kurdistan Region.
The meeting is an attempt to patch up relations in order to face down challenges including the Kurdistan Regional Government’s cash shortage, government formation in Baghdad, and the global coronavirus pandemic.
